MEPs Catherine Grèze, Raül Romeva (Greens), François Alfonsi, Ana Miranda (EFA), Izaskun Bilbao (ALDE) in Strasbourg presented a cross party declaration of support for the outcome of the International Conference (Aiete Conference) for promoting the resolution of the Basque conflict, signed by MEPs from various political groups.
The international conference, which took place at Donostia/San Sebastian in October 2011, was attended by international figures including Kofi Annan, Gro Harlem Bruntland, Bertie Ahern, Pierre Joxe, Gerry Adams and Jonathan Powell.
The MEPs announced that a conference will take place in the European Parliament on 29 March to discuss the outcomes of the international conference, and the prospects for building a lasting peace. The conference will be attended by Jonathan Powell, one of the endorsers of the Aiete declaration, and formerly the chief of staff to the UK Prime Minister who played an important role in the peace process in Ireland.
The MEPs emphasised the important role that the European Union and the European institutions including the European Parliament have to play in supporting the ongoing peace process and resolution of Europe’s last armed conflict.
